Conversation history for Claude Code
Session Trail
Browse, search and continue every Claude Code conversation — right inside your editor. Claude Code keeps your sessions on disk but offers no way to look back at them. This does.
Open it with Cmd+Shift+H on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+H on Windows and Linux.
Session Trail was published as “Claude Code History” until version 0.30.0 (October 2026). The extension ID (doorsofperception.claude-code-history) does not change, and existing installs update in place.
Every conversation, however far back
Read every past Claude Code session — your messages, Claude’s replies, tool calls and thinking blocks — sorted by date and filtered by project. Artifacts and Markdown files written during a session appear as cards you can open or preview.
Type in the composer at the bottom and the conversation continues right there, in a chat view that runs your own claude CLI.

Search inside every message
Deep Search looks inside the full text of every message, not just titles. Bookmark the conversations you keep coming back to, and export any of them to Markdown.

See where the work went
A statistics dashboard for your history: conversation and message counts, daily activity over the last 30 days, model usage and your most active projects.

How the week was actually spent
Insights shows active time, session counts, the share of sessions linked to a task, and the sessions that never made it into one — over 7, 14 or 30 days, broken down by task and by folder.

The conversations in these screenshots are made up for the screenshots.

Requirements
- Claude Code CLI — needed for the chat view and Resume. Reading your history only needs the logs Claude Code has already written to
~/.claude/projects/. - VS Code 1.85.0 or later, or an editor that installs from Open VSX, such as Cursor, Windsurf or Antigravity.
- Windows, macOS or Linux.
FAQ
The Preview button on an artifact is greyed out.
Preview renders the artifact’s original file, which Claude Code writes to a temporary folder. That folder is cleared when your machine restarts, so for older artifacts the file is usually gone. Use Open in Browser instead — it opens the published artifact on claude.ai (you need to be signed in to Claude).
What’s the difference between the Chat View and Resume Session?
The Chat View continues the session in a panel inside VS Code — good for quick follow-ups and reading with context. Resume Session runs claude --resume in a terminal — use it when you need interactive permission prompts, image paste, or slash-command UI, which the headless chat panel can’t provide.
Does it send my conversations anywhere?
No. It reads only local files from ~/.claude/projects/, with no telemetry and no authentication. The only thing it ever sends is your Pro license key, to Gumroad’s license API, to verify it.
See everything your AI already did.
Session Trail is free to install. Reading every conversation stays free; Pro is a one-time $5.
On Cursor, Windsurf or Antigravity? Both extensions are on Open VSX.
